Cheeky Merino Joy is a wonderfully soft sport weight yarn made from 100% of the finest organic merino wool. Cheeky is not scratchy and is available in many beautiful colours. When doing any crochet project of any difficulty level, one of the biggest considerations is what type of yarn to use. A pattern will almost always give yarn instructions. Together with the needle size instructions, you should be able to produce the required gauge – or at least come close. But what’s the difference between all these yarns?

I love all the Knit Picks yarns, and this beautiful one is no exception. In the US, we fixtures live hockey north west use the Craft Yarn Council ’s Standard Yarn Weight System as seen above, which gives yarn weights a number from 0 to 7 . I found that Aunt Lydia’s #3 crochet thread was 19 WPI, so not quite sport weight. Generally speaking, baby blankets with Bernat Blanket use 3 to 4 balls. The texture, hook size and density of stitches are pretty much the deciding factors. Generally, plant based fibers do not stretch as much as animal fibers, unless they are blended with polyester, elastane, or acrylic.
Sport weight yarn and DK weight yarn are often viewed as interchangeable, but they do have a slight difference. Sport weight yarn is a teeny bit lighter or finer than DK weight. Use these weights for mid-weight socks, accessories, shawls, wraps, and sweaters. Sport weight yarns are typically knit on US 3-5 needles, and DK weights on US 5-7 needles. Worsted Weight This is what is often considered ordinary knitting yarn.
What Is Dk Weight Yarn And How Is It Different
Fingering weight yarn is often used for socks, lightweight sweaters and accessories, and Fair Isle or colorwork patterns. Fingering weight is sometimes listed as “baby yarn” or “sock yarn” and is about double the weight of lace yarn. Fingering weight yarns are typically knit on US 1-4 needles. Sport weight yarn (5-ply) is a fine weight yarn, and sits between fingering weight and DK. Because it’s a delicate yarn, sport weight is perfect for knits worked on small 3.50mm needles – think comfy socks and dreamy lightweight sweaters and cardigans. Mad Hatter superwash merino is a soft and springy sport weight yarn with a tubular construction. Hand Dyed by Wonderland Yarns Mad Hatter is available in stunning colorways. If you were to use a worsted weight instead of a light worsted weight, your gauge would be different again, this time in the opposite direction. Using a worsted weight yarn in place of a DK weight yarn will make your project come out bigger than intended.
Sport & Dk Weight Yarns
Right now I am knitting with a double strand of lace weights that seem nice as a light worsted on US #7 . We’re heading into brave territory here – many vintage patterns no longer have yarns available, and the weight they suggest might sound completely foreign. There once was a time that there wasn’t an industry standard of yarn weight, and sometimes the weight instead referred to the number of plies the yarn had. When knitting a vintage pattern, you’ll need to do some research! Look around on the internet for information on the old yarn and see if you can discern the weight. If not, you’ll need to do some serious experimenting with swatching to find the right yarn weight for the pattern.

DK weight yarn is very common for crochet and knitting patterns, so it’s widely available and easy to find. The Craft Yarn Council creates and sets yarn standard on commonly used gauges and needle/hook sizes. Now you can easily find the right yarn size for your project based on gauge. DK yarns are extremely versatile, and can be used for all sorts of projects! You’ll find a dk weight sweater in stores year-round–so there is always something to knit or crochet with worsteds on hand. If you’re new to knitting, patterns can look like they’re written in another language.
They are designed to go along for the ride with the more substantial yarn that you are knitting with. For instance, you might carry along an eyelash yarn with a wool yarn when knitting a scarf to give it some extra pizzazz. The wool “carries” the eyelash yarn like a fashionable purse. When adding a carrying weight yarn to a project, use the weight of the more substantial yarn to make gauge calculations. Synthetic, or man-made fibers are hypoallergenic, machine washable, and extremely durable! Acrylic is perfect for home decor and accessory projects with structure and stitch definition.
